Kotone clutched the Pokeball in her hand with apprehension. She had just obtained a Totodile, against the advice of her mother. Their personalities would be ill-suited for each other, certainly, but this would force her to learn how to deal with the bold and self-aggrandizing, for those were the exact words with which Professor Elm had described this Pokemon. She pressed the realease button and in a rapid flowing and soft glow of red light, Totodile emerged, and blinked at her incredulously.

“I’m your trainer now,” she said, more confidently than she felt. “So we’ll have to learn how to get along. You know, I’ve heard a lot of good things about you. You’re strong and brave, and I think we can go places together. I think we can become champions.”

If it had an eyebrow, Kotone knew her Totodile would be raising one right now. She sighed. Time to get to work.

“You know, since I respect Pokemon, I try to give them as much time as possible outside of their Pokeball. I won’t force you back inside. Now, look over there.” She gestured in the direction of Route 29. “See that tall, deep green? Well, that’s where we’re headed. Are you ready?”

Solemnly, Totodile turned to her and nodded. Their adventure was about to begin.
